Derrygonnelly Harps 0-13 v Devenish St Marys 0-6

Played in slippy and wet conditions, with a few fairly heavy showers throughout the game itself, the Harps did enough to weather the storm early in the second half and pull clear for a win.

Devenish set out their intentions early with the inclusion of big John O’Flanagan around the middle and a titanic struggle was expected around the middle third.
The Harps started the brighter, an early attack saw the ball skidding away from Ryan and the weather was setting the terms.  Eamo done well to dispossess Conor McGowan and set up Conall to score the opening point.

Devenish replied with a free after Tiarnan was blew in defence and Thomas Treacy struck it over, maybe 35 yards on the stand side.  Level game.

Garvan Jones was freed up after excellent team play from Foss and Lee allowing Garvan to take on a shot but Martin ‘Waa’ Doherty blocked the shot superbly.  There were quite a few turnovers, frees conceded and things like that which upset the applecart for a few minutes but Micky then showed the leadership, taking the ball from the half back line to the half forward line, offloaded to Eamo who was fouled.  Conall dispatched the free, and this is followed up with the standard Keeves point after good grafting from Shane.  Our working the ball was good, despite the conditions becoming difficult.  Big John hit a free from the cinema sideline which was deflected out for a 45 and Thomas Treacy stroked it over beautifully and there was only a point between the sides.

Conall then hit a free while things got a bit humid around the middle, John O’Fla got a yellow card and Ryan was beginning to get the thing going.  Shane had a go but it was a bit of a watery shot in truth, perhaps his mind was clouded between the goal or the point, a mist opportunity though.  (Sorry Shane!) Devenish went up the field winning a free 30 yards out but it went wide.  It was milling down and the wet ball meant there were piles of handling errors.  Shot selection also was clumsy for both sides.  Ryan and Garvan both pointed to put 4 between them approaching half time.  Big John hits a point after Jack Love was a bit unlucky coming out and we go in at half time with three points as a flood barrier.

The poor shooting from both teams was the talking point at the half time tea break.  Monsoon like conditions weren’t helping either.

The second half saw Devenish begin brightly and with a bit of intent.  Big John O pointed from the left about 35 yards out.  Both teams were blown for a bit of overcarrying and Big John O points another free, while a few high balls were rained in on top of Odhran but he dealt well with them.  Next thing ya know, Joe O’Brien pops over a 21 yard free after a tug of a jersey and she’s level! 0-6 to 0-6.  The noise from the stand starts booming around Brewster as Chris O’Brien and Aidy McKenna enter the fray; its game on you hope!

But the truth be told here at 0-6 a piece, Devenish never moved up a gear.  Conall points a monster 45 yards out, Foss pops up with a nice point after Conall and Ryan work it in and we have the momentum again.  Devenish miss a straightforward enough free.  Lee Jones gusts up and down his wing with intent, always an option.  We then work the ball upfield and Shane has a shot at goal again but sees his shot blocked well by Ruairi Doherty, before patient build up releases Garvan who points with a lovely swing of the boot on the cinema side, and then a great team play move sees Conall thunder a point from 40 yards out, and suddenly we’re four points up.  Devenish hit a number of wides here, and how badly they needed them to go over.  The Harps lauch a bit of a whirlwind, powering forward time and time again.  Garvans shot at goal is blocked by Jason Love, but the patient build up sees the ball recycled and Foss gets on the end of the move and points under high pressure on the cinema side.  Garvan then finds himself put through with plenty of time and space and he takes his point when maybe there was a sniff of goal on (#TakeYourPoints) and then, appropriately, Conall finishes the game with an absolutely outrageous strike from a free on the 45.  It was a stormer of a score in fairness!

And that was that.  0-13 to 0-6.

Devenish will be disappointed that when they did have the momentum and levelled the thing, they couldn’t kick on.  They'll rue the many wides they accumulated.

For ourselves, there’s quite a bit of work to do.  We controlled the thing reasonably well at times but still let the opposition into the game, especially at the start of the second half.  I have a feeling it’ll be raining shooting drills around Harpland this week as well… #ShotSelection

Job done, into the semi-final draw.
