Harps get past Devenish, but feeling the Blues?

Harps 1-13 Devenish 0-9
Football. Its a funny oul game. The Harps supporters were almost muted at the final whistle.  Perhaps this performance will have left a lot of questions to be answered.

And yet we got off to the dream start, an early ball in from Shane saw Conall one-on-one in an aerial battle with Vincent O'Brien, Conall plucked her out of the air, turned, carried and netted.  Then literally a minute later, Ryan rattles the black spot of the crossbar with an absolute rasper of a shot, and Mug points from the rebound.  We look like we are in total control, and yet we sit back.  Ruairi Maguire is causing all kinds of bother, he hits the post at the other end and minutes later when he is through again, Eamo comes in with the shoulder to take him down. Ref blows the whistle, 14 yard free.  Devenish supporters were particularly irate at the referees decision to only brandish a yellow to Eamo.  Chris O'Brien points the free.  Devenish were winning everything around the middle, Martin Doherty in particular winning a bagful of break ball, we retreated and got ourselves set up again.  A free from Gary McKenna after initial grafting from Leigh Jones and Wardy put us 1-2 to 0-1 up, but Devenish came back with a score from corner back Vinny O'Brien.  Garvan Jones pointed a free after a clearance at the other end from Wardy (yep, deep in his own defence!) and Terry O'Flanagan points a Devenish free and its 1-3 to 0-3.  Devenish put a few balls in towards Jack but he deals with them well, and Tiarnan makes a great clearance, defensively we are working so hard.  Then another bit of drama.  Garvan Jones is taken down by Martin Doherty on the stand-side about 40 yards out.  Referee Karol Bradshaw gives him a black card.  Devenish supporters are outraged and the noise lifts another decibel.  From the kick-out, Mug wins the break and feeds it to Garvan who runs 40 yards to point, followed by a nice point from Wardy after Gary McKenna puts in the leg work.  Ryan then makes a trademark surging run, and points a monster of a score from 45 yards out and suddenly its 1-6 to 0-3, and then Foss goes on the attack, runs maybe 50 yards and points to put us 1-7 to 0-3 ahead and you'd have to say, we look like we are in the driving seat.

Half time 1-7 to 0-3

Having finished the first half strongly, we started the second half with a Ryan catch from the throw-in, a 40 yard run and a great point.  Devenish hit two points on the bounce, two frees from Thomas Treacy, both from 45 yards out and both great scores it has to be said. Garvan then turned his man on the sideline and soloed in, to fist over the bar to put us 1-9 to 0-5 up.  Devenish hit another two in reply, a free from Terry O'Flanagan 14 yards out and a great snapshot from Ruairi Maguire who was under pressure from the Harps defence to point.  McKenna pointed the free that Decy Cass won.  Then Moffat has bombed up the field, he's maybe ten yards out on the right hand side of goal, he's strongly tackled, the Harps crowd can't believe he hasn't got a free, and Devenish start to get their tails up.  The surging runs of Conor McGowan up the wing and the energetic Ruairi Maguire see Devenish getting plenty of possessions.  The game gets a bit niggly.  Vinny O'Brien gets a yellow for a needless trip on Ryan, and then there was a bit of "testing the jerseys" between the O'Briens and the Joneses, before the referee dished out four yellow cards for the kimsey to Marty, Vinny, Conall and Garvan, and Vinny O'Brien was sent off for his second infringement.  Another blow for Devenish saw Chris O'Brien have to go off injured - wishing you a speedy recovery Chris -  and then after a bit of pinball, Ciaran Mulrone pointed to leave it 1-10 to 0-8.  Substitute Lee Jones pointed after a trademark surging run from Ryan while Treacy pointed another 45 yard free to leave it 1-11 to 0-9 as the game entered injury time Conall pointed and Lee Jones got his second after he started a move and got on the end of it to leave it 1-13 to 0-9 at the full time whistle.

So there you go.  Another Championship final to look forward to.
And yet, its funny how after winning a massive quarter final against Roslea by 6 points, and a massive semi-final against the league holders and last years beaten finalists by 7 points, we feel there is so much to improve on.  Football.  A funny oul game.
